Hamas and Islamic Jihad say that a visit by Obama to the Temple Mount will be a declaration of war on the Islamic world.

The Hamas and Islamic Jihad terror groups threatened on Friday that a visit by U.S. President Barack Obama to the Temple Mount during his upcoming visit to Israel will be a declaration of war on the Arab and the Islamic world.

A Hamas representative in the Al-Aqsa mosque, Mushir al-Masri, even called for a third intifada (uprising) and for Egyptian assistance in the "resistance" if Obama chooses to visit the Temple Mount.

According to the Bethlehem-based Ma’an news agency, the Gaza-based terrorist organizations made the threats during a protest march on Friday over the riots that broke out earlier in the day on the Temple Mount.

According to the report, Khalid al-Batash, a senior Islamic Jihad member, also called to prevent Obama from visiting the compound.

Obama will be arriving in the region later this month, and PA media has been widely speculating that he plans to visit the site of the Al-Aqsa mosque. However, Washington is not planning such a visit.

Political and religious leaders in the Palestinian Authority have stressed that Obama should not visit the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in a way that might compromise what they called its "Muslim sovereignty."

Sen. John McCain of Arizona kept up his criticism of some of the GOP’s younger wing on Friday — this time calling Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, and Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan “wacko birds.”

“They were elected, nobody believes that there was a corrupt election, anything else,” McCain told The Huffington Post in an interview. “But I also think that when, you know, it’s always the wacko birds on right and left that get the media megaphone.”

When asked to clarify the statement, McCain said he was referencing “Rand Paul, Cruz, Amash, whoever.”

“I think it can be harmful if there is a belief among the American people that those people are reflective of the views of the majority of Republicans,” McCain told The Huffington Post. “They're not.”

Joint US-Israel-Turkish-Jordanian HQ to operate in Syria in chemical war

REVIVIM JUNCTION, Israel — On a dusty field in Israel's southern desert, the military is gearing up for the next battle against a familiar foe: Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

As the Syrian civil war intensifies, military planners are growing increasingly jittery that the fighting could spill over into Israel, potentially dragging the Islamic militant group that is allied with President Bashar Assad into the fray. After battling Hezbollah to a stalemate in 2006, the Israeli military says it has learned key lessons and is prepared to inflict heavy damage on the group if fighting begins again.

The Israel-Lebanon border has remained largely quiet since that last war. But Hezbollah has since replenished its arsenal and has waged a shadow war with Israel around the world. The fall of the Syrian leader or alternatively an Israel strike against Hezbollah's other main patron, Iran, could spark another full-fledged war.

"There is an increase in tension because of Syria," a senior commander in the military's northern command said about a possible battle with Hezbollah. The commander, who traveled south to observe Thursday's exercise here, spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military protocol.

Rocks and Firebombs on the Temple Mount

Worshippers started throwing rocks at security forces, Friday afternoon, at the end of Muslim prayers at Temple Mount mosques in Jerusalem's Old City.

Police stationed at the Mughrabi gate broke in and began to throw stun grenades to disperse the stone throwers.

The rioters responded with firebombs. One policeman was lightly injured and taken to hospital. A number of demonstrators were also injured.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said that about 100 protesters, many of them masked, attacked police, who fired stun grenades in response.

"Petrol bombs were thrown at police," he told AFP. "Several police officers were injured by stones that were thrown and were evacuated to hospital."

An AFP journalist at the scene said the clash was triggered by Palestinian media allegations that a policeman at the compound, one of Islam's holiest sites, on Sunday kicked a holy book and trampled on it.

The death of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez has prompted eulogies from around the world, but few of the messages have been as eccentric as the second-coming predicted by Iran's president.

And as if returning to Earth alone was not enough, President Mahmud Ahmadinejad says Chavez will do so alongside some esteemed company.

"I have no doubt that he [Chavez] will return alongside Jesus Christ and the Mahdi [the Hidden Imam] to establish peace and justice in the world," Ahmadinejad wrote in an emotional condolence message posted on his personal website. The Mahdi is a revered figure among Shi'ite Muslims, many of whom believe he will return to save humanity.

Ahmadinejad, who had forged a close public friendship with Chavez, hailed his close ally for "serving the people of Venezuela and defending human and revolutionary values."

Iran has declared a national day of mourning in honor of Chavez's death, and Iranian media has said it was a "possibility" that Ahmadinejad would attend the funeral scheduled for March 8.

Ahmadinejad also supported allegations made by Venezuelan Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who said shortly before Chavez's death that he had "no doubt" the country's enemies had somehow given the leftist leader the cancer from which he eventually died.

California governor prepares implementation of Obama health care bill

While falsely trumpeting the commitment of state funds to provide limited medical coverage for families living in poverty, California Governor Jerry Brown and the ruling establishment are building the case for cuts to Medi-Cal (California’s Medicaid welfare program) in the coming years.

The vehicle of this plan is President Obama’s Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as ObamaCare, which, beginning January 2014, requires most Americans to buy health insurance or pay a penalty. Democratic politicians have made every effort to sell the health care overhaul as a progressive achievement.

Under the ACA, California would have the option of extending medical benefits to families living at between 100 percent and 138 percent of the federal poverty line, abysmally set at about $22,000 per year for a family of four. The federal government would subsidize the additional cost for the first three years, then scale down its subsidy to 90 percent of such cost by 2020.

At its core, the ACA is aimed at a further privatization and gutting of the health care for ordinary Americans, concealed behind an adequate extension of benefits to poor and working class families.

Medi-Cal serves nearly 9 million people, almost one in four California residents, who depend on the program for access to any kind of health service. The expansion being currently discussed would bring in 1.2 million new enrollees by 2017. While Governor Brown, a Democrat, touts the expansion of Medi-Cal coverage for this layer, the state has the option of withdrawing such coverage at any time. Brown has already made clear that the long-term costs for implementing the coverage are unknown and may undermine California’s precarious budget. There is also the possibility that the federal government may shift costs to the state.

In the next few years, federal support for Medi-Cal will run out, while health care costs will continue to grow rapidly. Given that state funding for medical benefit programs will remain optional, it is reasonable to assume that the option of reducing payments will be exercised. Republican Governor Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania, for instance, has already “opted out” of the expanded Medicaid payments, a decision that will leave between 482,000 and 683,000 adults uninsured.

White House admits it can't kill Americans with drones in US

Two leading figures within the Obama administration now insist that the president of the United States does not have the authority to launch drone strikes on US soil.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) received a response from the Obama administration on Thursday afternoon after spending 13 hours demanding answers about the possible use of drones inside of the United States.

During a briefing Thursday afternoon, White House press secretary Jay Carney said, "The president has not and would not use drone strikes against American citizens on American soil.”

Mr. Carney also elected to read a statement penned by Attorney General Eric Holder earlier that day that had been sent to Sen. Paul. Mr. Holder’s entire statement, only 43 words, confirmed Mr. Carney’s remark.

“It has come to my attention that you have now asked an additional question: ‘Does the President have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil?’ The answer to that question is no,” wrote the attorney general.

Second swarm of locusts descends on Israel’s south

Shifting winds blow hundreds of thousands of the flying pests across the Egyptian border; volunteers asked to look to the skies

Southerly winds on Friday blew a new swarm of locusts into Israel’s Negev Desert, raising fresh concern of damage to crops over the weekend.

The large swarm, the second to be blown into Israel over the Egyptian border in the space of a week, is thought to number hundreds of thousands of insects.

An Agriculture Ministry plane was tracking the advance of the locusts, and, as of Friday afternoon, placed them at Moshav Kmehin in the Ramat Negev region near the Egyptian border.

Earlier, the ministry asked for volunteers to patrol the region to look out for the incoming pests.

“If the winds bring the massive swarms from Egypt to here, we are going to be in big trouble,” said Yankale Moskovich, a farmer from Ramat Negev. “The best-case scenario is that all it brings us will be dust storms.”

Morsi to appeal suspension of Egypt's parliamentary elections

CAIRO // An Egyptian court overturned President Mohammed Morsi's decree calling for parliamentary elections to start in late April, a move that is likely to exacerbate tensions in Egypt and prolong political instability.

Egypt's presidency plans to appeal the administrative court's decision, saying that the election decrees are sovereign acts carried out by the presidency and should not be overturned.

The court ruled on Wednesday that the parliamentary election law should have been vetted by the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) for compliance with the constitution before it was ratified.

In January, the SCC found problems with the an earlier version of the law and sent it back to the upper house of parliament, or Shura Council, for revisions. But instead of checking again with the SCC, the Shura Council passed the law and Mr Morsi ordered elections beginning on April 22 and continuing until June.

Thousands Flee Northern Syria After Latest Airstrikes

Syrian rebels celebrate in a street in the northeastern Syrian city of Raqqah after capturing the provincial capital on March 4. The government has responded with air strikes, creating a new wave of refugees.

A new flood of Syrian refugees is streaming into southern Turkey after the Syrian air force bombed the city of Raqqah, a provincial capital that the government lost control of earlier this week.

The Syrian rebels overran Raqqah, capturing several high-ranking prisoners, including the provincial governor. Many residents supported the rebels, but when the airstrikes began, they packed in a hurry and fled, believing it was safer to make a dash for the border than stay at home.

The shells started crashing into residential neighborhoods Tuesday, says Rima, the only name she gave. She was standing at the border gate with Turkey waiting for her father to get across from the Syrian side.

"Raqqah is so bad, so bad. Everything is bombing. It's a disaster," she said.

When a shell landed this week in an apartment nearby, killing a neighbor, the family decided it was time to go. They grabbed their most important belongings, leaving everything else behind.

Rima was with her sister, whose eyes were red from crying. Raqqah had been a safe place, where many displaced Syrians had come for shelter — tripling the population. But now Rima and her family are displaced, too, and had no idea where they would sleep on this night.

"We don't know, we don't know anything," she said.

People at the border turned to watch a cloud of smoke rising in the distance: another airstrike, at least 25 so far, according to activists in Raqqah.

Abdul Karim Ayteh arrived here in a van with 18 family members. Some of his neighbors didn't make it.

"So many people want to come here, but they can't because there's no car, no [gasoline], and some of them don't have a passport," he said.

Syrian Jets and Rebels Strike in Iraq, 13 Killed Across Country

The war in Syria continues to be a threat to Iraq’s western flank. Violence today included attacks from both the Syrian Air Force and Syrian rebels. Overall, at least 13 Iraqis were killed and eight more were wounded.

A source at a Sinjar hospital reported the delivery of six bodies belonging to Iraqi soldiers killed by the rebel group the Syrian Free Army at a border crossing near Rabia. On Monday, fighting near this border crossing drove a number of Syrian soldiers into Iraq for medical care or safety. The group was ambushed and slaughtered while on Iraqi soil.

8 UN observers enter Israel to flee Syria fighting

Eight Filipino United Nations observers abandoned their post on the Israel-Syria border on Friday and crossed into Israel to escape fighting between anti-regime rebels and the Syria army. The peacekeepers belonged to the same unit whose troops were abducted by rebel forces on Wednesday near the village of Jamla.

They crossed over near an Israeli army position and had first “coordinated their arrival” with the IDF, said a defense official. Israeli troops and UN personnel greeted them near one of the border gates. The Filipino peacekeepers will be transferred to a UN base inside Israel.

On Friday, the Philippine government said Syrian rebels had failed to release the 21 UN peacekeepers and stuck to their demands for the repositioning of Syrian government forces before any handover.

The 21 peacekeepers were seized Wednesday just a kilometer (less than a mile) from the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, where the UN force has patrolled a cease-fire line between Israel and Syria for nearly four decades.

The spokesman for the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, Raul Hernandez, said the rebels had been expected to free the peacekeepers early Friday.

Multiple sources reject Israeli TV report on US president’s briefing for Jewish leaders, but one says he spoke of possible ‘policy initiative’ 6-12 months from now

NEW YORK — President Barack Obama will not be bringing any peace plan or even a “general framework” with him on his trip to Israel later this month, and he did not say he would in a briefing with Jewish leaders at the White House Thursday, according to sources in the administration and several participants in the meeting.

According to one participant, however, the president said: “That doesn’t mean six or nine or 12 months from now we won’t be in the midst of a policy initiative.”

Earlier Thursday, Israel’s Channel 10 reported that Obama planned to present a “general framework” for Israeli-Palestinian peace during his visit, quoting what it said were remarks made by the president in the White House briefing.

While he would not unveil a “comprehensive Middle East peace plan” during the trip, the Israeli TV report said, he told the Jewish leaders they should not rule out him doing so “sometime in the next six, nine or 12 months.”

A US source familiar with the White House’s plans for the trip described the Channel 10 report as “absolutely false.”

A senior administration official told The Times of Israel: “The president did invite leaders from across the American Jewish community to discuss and get input about his upcoming trip to Israel. He did not present a framework for peace talks.”

Senate confirms John Brennan as CIA Director

The US Senate voted 63-34 to endorse John Brennan as next head of te CIA after Rep. Sen. Paul Rand spoke for 13 hours to slow the appointment. Attorney General Eric Holder said that Obama would not use his authority to order a drone to kill an American on U.S. soil who was "not engaged in combat." But the White House declined to state that “targeted killings” of American citizens on US soil were unconstitutional.

North Korea ends peace pacts with South

North Korea says it is scrapping all non-aggression pacts with South Korea, closing its hotline with Seoul and shutting their shared border point.

The announcement follows a fresh round of UN sanctions punishing Pyongyang for its nuclear test last month.

Earlier, Pyongyang said it had a right to carry out a pre-emptive nuclear strike and was pulling out of the armistice that ended the Korean War.

The US said "extreme rhetoric" was not unusual for Pyongyang.

China, which is the North's only major ally, called for both North and South to show restraint and to continue talking.

Beijing rarely criticises its ally, but has criticised the North's nuclear tests and has given support to the UN's sanctions.

South Korea's President Park Geun-hye said the current security situation was "very grave" but that she would "deal strongly" with provocation from the North.

She also said she was ready to talk to Pyongyang if it "comes out on the path toward change".

NORAD evacuated, 'suspicious' packages turn out to be office supplies

1,500 employees were evacuated from NORAD headquarters for nearly five hours while five "suspicious packages" were investigated.

The packages were found in the Eberhardt-Findley Building, which houses both the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the U.S. Northern Command, in Peterson Air Force Base. Employees on Thursday morning described the boxes as seeming "out of place," and so 1,500 people were sent home for the day.

Officials sealed off a 500-foot safety zone while they brought in a team of military dogs to investigate the packages. KKTV reported that security was also boosted in neighboring buildings and the north gate going into Peterson AFB was closed until early afternoon.

In the course of the investigation, an Air Force spokesperson released a statement saying "preliminary test results of the package indicated that there is not a positive test for a nuclear, biological or chemical element contained within the package." The packages were then removed from the facility to be examined further, and the safety perimeter was removed.

N. Korean general says Pyongyang has nuke-tipped ICBMs on standby

SEOUL, March 8 (Yonhap) -- A North Korean general said Thursday that the country has placed long-range missiles armed with nuclear warheads on standby, as Pyongyang said it will not bow to the United Nations resolution condemning its latest atomic weapons test.

According to the Rodong Sinmun, an organ of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), Colonel General Kang Pyo-yong said soldiers are already positioned to launch a war of reunification if the order is given by its leaders. The paper said the general made clear at a speech given at a rally in Pyongyang that intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and other rockets capable of attacking pre-set targets have been armed with various types of atomic warheads.

UN unanimously sanctions North Korea

The UN Security Council voted unanimously to impose tougher sanctions on North Korea for its Feb. 12 underground nuclear test, hours after Pyongyang threatened a preemptive strike against the US and other “aggressors.” The new sanctions target “illicit activity” by North Korean diplomats, bulk transfers of cash by North Koreans, and banks and companies funneling cash or materials to support the country’s ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs.

There are currently no imminent nuclear threats against the United States at this time, however there are events occurring in the world theatre which require closer monitoring.

North Korea has announced that it will end the cease fire armistice with South Korea on Monday, March 11th, and has threatened to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the United States in retaliation for new U.N. sanctions that have been imposed upon it. While North Korea does not yet possess the capability of a nuclear ballistic missile launch, they are working toward that goal. Additionally, the United States remains extremely vulnerable to a coastal attack from ships as well as from smuggled nuclear weapons due to its porous border.

Currently, both the United States (along with South Korea) and North Korea are engaged in war games. While North Korea routinely engages in bluster, the proximity of the two war exercises coupled with very high tensions increase the risk of conflict to a level where the DEFCON Warning System believes it is prudent to raise the alert level at this time. It should be noted that the DEFCON Warning System foresees no threat to the United States directly should conflict break out.

Additionally of note, there have been some unusual moves by North Korea. The drills North Korea is conducting are on a state-wide level and there are unconfirmed reports that they have also imposed no-fly zones off its coasts, prepartory for short range missile activity. In the state capitol, has been observed that the country has begun camouflaging vehicles and making other preparations for attack. This could all be part of the drills North Korea is undertaking, but the seriousness of the situation requires a more prudent approach.

The Judiciary Committee is meeting today to mark-up the various civilian disarmament bills before the Senate. One of the bills in the frame: Senator Feinstein’s ”Assault Weapons Ban.” Readers watching the proceedings online tell TTAG that a proposed amendment would allow veterans to keep buying their “assault weapons” just like retired cops. Senator Feinstein opposed the amendment on the basis that veterans have PTSD and can’t be trusted with guns. Here’s her exact words:

THE PROBLEM WITH EXPANDING THIS IS THAT, YOU KNOW, WITH THE ADVENT OF PTSD, WHICH I THINK IS A NEW PHENOMENON AS A PRODUCT OF THE IRAQ WAR, IT’S NOT CLEAR HOW THE SELLER OR TRANSFER OF A FIREARM COVERED BY THIS BILL WOULD VERIFY THAT AN INDIVIDUAL WAS A MEMBER OR VETERAN AND THERE WAS NO IMPAIRMENT OF THAT INDIVIDUAL WITH RESPECT TO HAVING A WEAPON LIKE THIS.
