U.S. virologists intentionally engineer super-deadly pandemic flu virus

End Of Days News

flu

(NaturalNews) Two American researchers whose efforts to deliberately re-engineer the H5N1 avian flu virus to be more virulent and deadly to humans are now asking that a government-advised moratorium on their controversial research be lifted. According to TIME, the duo alleges that precise details about how it developed the deadly flu strain must be made public, and that its controversial research be allowed to continue for the sake of "public health."

As we reported back in early 2012, Ron Fouchier from the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands and Yoshihiro Kawaoka from the University of Wisconsin intentionally developed a militarized strain of H5N1 avian flu capable of easily transmitting among mammals. Natural strains of H5N1, on the other hand, primarily transmit between birds and other fowl only, which means this type of flu is not that significant of a threat to humans.

But for the alleged purpose of learning how H5N1 might mutate at some point in the future to become more of a threat to humans, Fouchier and Kawaoka deliberately induced these mutations in test ferrets with complete success. In the process, they essentially discovered a way to potentially spark a global flu pandemic with the potential to kill or seriously injure billions of people. And following their insane discovery, they actually tried to publish the recipe for this deadly strain in public journals.

Concerned about the possibility that this critical information might be misused, the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB), a federal advisory committee that oversees research of this nature, urged the two scientists not to publish their findings in the journals Nature and Science. And while they agreed to this recommendation initially, Fouchier and Kawaoka are now pushing to continue on with their work.

"Because H5N1 virus transmission studies are essential for pandemic preparedness and understanding the adaptation of influenza viruses to mammals, researchers who have approval from their governments and institutions to conduct this research safely, under appropriate biosafety and biosecurity conditions, have a public-health responsibility to resume this important work," allege the original researchers about their work.

Only about 350 people worldwide have ever died from H5N1

Based on the wording of this petition, you would think that H5N1 is responsible for killing at least tens of thousands of people every year, and that we must take action now to stop its spread. But in reality, H5N1 has only infected about 600 people ever since it was first discovered in Hong Kong back in 1997. And among these 600, only about 350 ended up dying, which means roughly 24 people a year, on average, die from H5N1 infection.

Contrast this with the roughly 5,000 Americans who die every year from food poisoning, for instance, and it becomes abundantly clear that H5N1 is hardly the serious public health threat that Fouchier, Kawaoka, and others continually claim it is. The average person is more likely to die from choking on a piece of lettuce than he or she is of ever contracting H5N1 influenza, let alone dying from it. So why all the focus on deliberately inducing H5N1 to spread among humans and cause a real pandemic?

The real answer to this question is shrouded in mystery. If you believe the official explanation, researchers merely want to anticipate how H5N1 might mutate in the future in order to get a handle early on how to address it. It is a purely hypothetical scenario that may not ever come to pass, of course, but it is the purported reason and justification for such research, even though such research could end up being the cause of a deadly H5N1 outbreak in the very near future.

And this brings us to the second and more sinister explanation. Researchers could be deliberately engineering a super-deadly form of H5N1 for the unstated purpose of eventually releasing it into the wild in order to trigger a pandemic. This is not that far-fetched when considering that the researchers involved in this work are carefully studying how many times the already-mutated virus needs to spread between mammals on its own in order to naturally mutate again into an even more deadly virus.

"The case fatality rate of wild H5N1 in the WHO (World Health Organization) database is nearly 60 percent ... So if a strain of H5N1 with that fatality rate were engineered to spread like seasonal flu, hundreds of millions of people's lives would be at risk," Thomas Inglesby, Director and CEO of the Center for Biosecurity at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, is quoted as saying by CNSNews.com.

"Even a strain a hundred times less fatal would place at risk millions of people's lives," he added.

Deadly GM flu research that could 'wipe out significant portion of humanity' set to restart

End Of Days News

Deadly GM flu research that could 'wipe out significant portion of humanity' set to restart

  • Flu experts overturn self-imposed ban on creating mutant firms of the H5N1 bird flu virus
  • They claim the risky research is needed to prepare in case it naturally mutates to human transmissible form
  • But leading experts condemn decision to restart research into genetically modified versions of the virus
  • Humans can only currently catch H5N1 from infected birds, but when they do it is usually fatal
Deadly: The H5N1 strain of bird flu can currently pass from birds to birds, and from birds to humans, but not between humans. When it does infect a human, it is usually fatal.

However, other leading scientists condemned the decision to go ahead with the research, with one warning an 'accidental release could wipe out a significant portion of humanity.'
Forty of the world's leading flu researchers voluntarily halted investigations into the airborne transmission of the H5N1 avian flu strain last January, following public outrage over the work.
Announcing the decision to resume studies in a letter published in the journals Science and Nature last night, they said the work would only be carried out in the most secure sites in countries that agree it can go ahead.
That will allow work to start again in key laboratories in the Netherlands and elsewhere but not yet in the U.S or U.S.-funded research centres, pending further safety and security guidelines there.
Flu experts said they have recognised the fears over their risky studies of the pathogen and worked hard to calm them, and now it is time to push on.
They say the studies are essential for a deeper understanding of H5N1, which many fear could one day spark a lethal pandemic in humans.
'We want the world to be better prepared than we currently are when an H5N1 virus causes a pandemic,' said Yoshihiro Kawaoka of Tokyo University, a leading researcher on avian flu.
'We understand the risks associated with our research and we take every precaution to conduct H5N1 virus experiments safely.'

'Should we be trying to engineer in the laboratory a virus so dangerous that a release could wipe out a significant portion of humanity? I vote no'

Sir Richard Roberts, genetic engineering expert and Nobel Prize winner
He told reporters on a teleconference the research would boost efforts to develop global flu 'biosurveillance', early warning systems, as well as better flu drugs and vaccines.
But other scientific experts warned that the potential risks of going ahead with the research outweighed the possible benefits.
Former government chief scientist Professor Lord May told The Independent: 'As this research become more widely known and disseminated, there is the opportunity for evil people to pervert it.
'My other concern is the statistics of containment are not what they ought to be.'
Genetic engineering expert Sir Richard Roberts, who won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1993, said the decision had been 'made by a small group of self-interested scientists' and made 'a mockery of the concept of informed consent'.
'Should we be trying to engineer in the laboratory a virus so dangerous that an accidental release could wipe out a significant portion of humanity?' he asked. 'I vote no.'

In the open letter announcing the lifting of the ban, flu researchers from the U.S., China, Japan, Britain, the Netherlands, Canada, Hong Kong, Italy and Germany admitted their research was not without risks.
'However, because the risk exists in nature that an H5N1 virus capable of transmission in mammals may emerge, the benefits of this work outweigh the risks,' they added.
Wendy Barclay, a flu virologist at Imperial College London and one of the letter's signatories, said lifting the moratorium would lead to scientific discoveries that would have 'direct consequence for human and animal health'.
All research into H5N1 transmission was halted last January after teams at the University of Wisconsin and the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam made mutant forms that can be transmitted directly among mammals, meaning they could in theory also pass between people.

SERIOUS PANDEMIC THREAT

There are serious concerns that the H5N1 bird flu virus poses an enormous pandemic threat.
The first avian influenza virus to infect humans occurred in Hong Kong in 1997 in an epidemic that was linked to chickens.
Human cases H5N1 have since been reported in Asia, Africa, Europe, Indonesia, Vietnman, the Pacific, and the near East.
Hundreds of people have become sick with this virus, with slightly more than 60 per cent of those who catch it dying of the illness.
The more the avian flu virus spreads, the greater the chances of a worldwide outbreak in humans.
Currently, bird flu can be transmitted from birds to birds, and birds to humans, but not from humans to humans.
When it does pass from birds to humans, it is usually fatal. Scientists are concerned the same mutations needed to make it transmissible among mammals in a lab could one day happen in nature.
When news of the work emerged late in 2011, it prompted the U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity to call for the scientific papers about it to be censored to prevent details falling into the wrong hands.
The censorship call sparked a fierce debate about how far scientists should be allowed to go in manipulating infectious agents in the name of research.
Professor Barclay said this had been a 'knee-jerk response from certain quarters previously naive of this approach, expressing horror that scientists were brewing up deadly diseases.'
During the moratorium, the World Health Organisation recommended that scientists explain the biological and other security measures they use to contain the virus and make more effort to show why the research is so important.
'The laboratories have expanded on their containment and security system ... and I think the value of the results has been recognised,' said John McCauley, director of the WHO collaborating centre for flu research at Britain's National Institute for Medical Research.
Ron Fouchier, from the Rotterdam lab which led one of the studies, said his team would start fresh research on H5N1 viruses 'in the next few weeks'.
'We really need to understand how these viruses become airborne,' he told reporters in the teleconference, saying that was the primary goal of the work.

THE PRESIDENT DID NOT GET THE FLU SHOT, NOR DID HE GIVE IT TO HIS KIDS OR WIFE...IN FACT PROVE TO ME THAT ANY OF OUR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS PARTOOK IN THIS VACCINE? HOWEVER THEY SURE WANT US TO GET IT! I AM NOT A SHEEP AS THEY WOULD CALL THE PEOPLE, THEY ARE THE IGNORANT ONES EVER TO THINK THEY COULD FOOL GOD'S PEOPLE! SEE YOU AT ARMAGEDDON YOU IGNORANT FOOLS!

Michael Savage: Don't trust feds on flu shot

Asking listeners to put aside his political orientation for a moment, talk-radio host Michael Savage questioned the federal government’s recommendation that citizens get a flu shot.

“Did Harry Reid take a flu shot? Did Barack Obama take a flu shot? Did Barack Obama’s lovely family take a flu shot? Did Joe Biden take a flu shot?” Savage asked.
“Which of the mandarins took the flu shot?”

He explained that he was talking specifically about vaccines and was not advocating the avoidance of all pharmaceuticals.

Known for his many books on herbal medicines, Savage acknowledged he has benefited from “an awful lot of life-saving regular medicines.”

“The Flu vaccine?” he asked. “No, I wouldn’t take it.”

Savage noted “not everything your government tells you is true.”

“So it’s good to have a cynic in radio who questions authority,” he said.

Dr. Savage nails the diagnosis in his classic “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder: Savage Solutions,” available at WND’s Superstore
Savage argued that Centers for Disease Control authorities have to guess what the vaccine should be made of.

“So they choose five strains out of 250-plus strains of Influenza A, and if they don’t choose the right one, you’re going to get sick,” he said.

“So you’re putting your faith in the CDC’s ability to guess the one that might be a pandemic.”

He said that this year, the CDC guessed right on two of the strains and wrong on one of them.

He acknowledged that many people calculate that the risk of a side effect is one in 1 million against the one-in-10,000 risk of being hospitalized or dying.

“But I believe the risks outweigh any benefit,” Savage said.

The vaccine, he pointed out, contains formaldehyde and thimerosal – an organic compound containing mercury, which impairs the neurological and immune systems – along with detergents, antibiotics and allergens that cause infertility.

The CDC itself, he noted, lists some of these ingredients on its own website as harmful, though it insists the amounts in vaccines is negligible.

Someone may well say, Savage acknowledged,” Well, I took the shot and it didn’t kill me.”

But when you’re older, he argued, “and you get ALS or Alzheimer’s disease or MS, or you watch your kid develop seizures, or your kid becomes autistic, God forbid, what are you going to say?”

The relationship between the vaccine and and any one person acquiring these diseases can’t be known for certain, he said, “But why increase the chances of inducing such illnesses in yourself and your children?”
He argued that when it comes to flu vaccines, his political leanings are not relevant.
Recalling a phrase he said he coined 30 years ago, the “language, borders, culture” talk host said, “Germs don’t discriminate.”

“They don’t know if you’re a good guy or bad guy,” he said. “They don’t care if you’re a conservative or a liberal. They don’t care if you’re funny or mean. They don’t care what your race is., what your sexual orientation is. They don’t care what country you came from.”

Does anyone else find it interesting that those who GOT the flu shot is not safe from this virus....SO WHY IS IT PUSHED UPON US?

Even those who got flu shots may not be safe from catching the viral infection: Mary Alice Lavin, director of infection, prevention and control at Rush University Medical Center explained to CBS Chicago that the flu vaccine is only effective in about 60 percent of people, though the shot should lessen the impact of the illness -- and it's not too late to still get one.

Chicago Flu Outbreak

With the Chicago area in the midst of its worst flu season in nearly a decade, a number of overcrowded area hospitals have been forced to tell ambulances to temporarily bypass their facilities and take patients elsewhere, if possible.
According to ABC Chicago, eight area hospitals had to turn away emergency room patients with the flu Monday evening due to crowding issues. At least three of them -- Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Swedish Covenant Hospital and University of Chicago Medical Center -- were reportedly still on bypass Tuesday morning.
The hospitals are being overrun with individuals suffering from the flu as the season has hit earlier and harder than it has in recent years, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. In Downers Grove, the Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital was seeing wait times of up to three hours for treatment.
Julie Morita, medical director for the Chicago Department of Public Health's immunization program, told DNAinfo.com Chicago the number of flu cases in the city are still growing.
"So far, it's just going up," Morita told DNA. "Typically the flu increases in January or later, but this is the earliest we've seen in at least the past five years."
While forty-one states nationwide are also experiencing a flu outbreak, the virus's impact in Illinois has been among the most severe, according to Fox.
