Jewish group says EU ‘legtimized terror’
JTA — A European Jewish group has accused the European Union of “legitimizing terrorism” by singling Israel out for criticism.
The accusation came in an open letter by the chairmen of the Brussels-based European Jewish Parliament sent on Wednesday to the presidents of the European Council and other EU institutions.
The letter was in response to the EU’s condemnation on Dec. 11 of Israeli policies vis-à-vis the Palestinian Authority.
“We regret the one-sided statement which does not serve peace initiatives, but only strengthens the ambitions of terrorist organizations,” the letter by Joel Rubinfeld and Vadim Rabinovitch read. The EU statement “provides legitimization for terrorist acts” by “condemning the actions of the only real democracy in the Middle East.”
The letter noted Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal’s recent calls for Israel’s destruction.
The EU’s condemnation urged Israel not to freeze the Palestinian Authority’s funds; to cancel planned construction in the West Bank, and called on the Palestinians to “use constructively” their newly gained non-member state observer status at the United Nations.
On Dec. 11, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman also harshly criticized some of his European counterparts, accusing them of intentionally ignoring calls for Israel’s destruction.
“In the eyes of some European foreign ministers, the destruction of Israel is a given,” he said. He then mentioned Europe’s failure to address the threat against Jews prior to the Holocaust.
“The Europeans decided to pressure our side alone and ignore the terror organizations on the Palestinian side,” he added.

Bi-partisan letter urging Pollard’s release circulated in US Congress
WASHINGTON (JTA) — A Republican and a Democrat in the US House of Representatives are circulating a letter among their colleagues urging President Obama to commute Jonathan Pollard’s life sentence to time served.
“Mr. Pollard has now served 25 years in prison, many of which in solitary confinement, for his actions,” says the letter circulated by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Eliot Engel (D-NY). “There is no doubt that he paid a heavy price and, from the standpoint of either punishment or deterrence, we believe he has been imprisoned long enough.”
The letter has so far garnered 40 signatories, mostly from Democrats, but with an increasing number of Republicans.
A similar bid in 2010 drew only Democrats. But the latest letter, and Smith’s leadership role in circulating it, are signs that Pollard’s advocates have made inroads among Republicans, who have tended to sympathize with arguments in the national security community that Pollard’s crimes were so grave he should never be released.
The Conference of Presidents of American Jewish Organizations on Monday praised the latest initiative, although the letter is still circulating and has yet to be sent.
“As we are in the holiday season it would be a particularly appropriate time to heed the appeal of the many leaders from a wide variety of spheres of American life, in addition to the many members of Congress who have appealed for his release,” said the Presidents’ Conference in a statement. “This includes people who were involved in the case or others who were initially opposed to any act of clemency.”
Pollard, a former US Navy analyst arrested in 1986, was sentenced to life in 1987 for spying for Israel. In recent years, Pollard, 58, has suffered illnesses and has occasionally been hospitalized.

Jordan warns Israelis not to visit wearing ‘Jew clothes’
The Jordanian Tourism Ministry on Wednesday warned Israeli visitors not to wear outwardly Jewish garb while visiting the Hashemite Kingdom and to avoid performing Jewish rituals during their stay.
According to a copy of a ministry memo issued at the end of November, Amman instructed Jordanian tour operators to inform their Israeli counterparts to advise Israeli visitors not to wear “Jewish dress” or perform “religious rituals in public places” so as to prevent an unfriendly reaction by Jordanian citizens.
The Jordan Society of Tourism and Travel Agents forwarded on the imperative to Jordanian tour operators, one of whom forwarded a copy to The Times of Israel.
The memo did not specify what constituted Jewish clothing.
The Jordanian Tourism Ministry was not available for comment on the story.
Israeli tour operators contacted by The Times of Israel had not been notified of any such directives. Kfir Schwartz, director of Ahalan Olympus, a tour company in Israel that organizes trips to Jordan, said that such advisories are “not something new” but have never been formal.
Despite the liberal atmosphere in Jordan, he said, Israelis and Jews are typically advised not to wear outwardly Jewish clothes or symbols, and occasionally are met with trouble from Jordanian authorities when crossing the border.
Earlier this year, six Israeli tourists were assaulted in a market in southern Jordan after vendors were angered by their traditional Jewish skullcaps.
The six men and women arrived at a market in the town of Rabba, 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of the capital Amman, when one of the vendors identified the tourists as Israeli due to mens’ skullcaps, which “provoked the sensibilities of the vendors,” independent daily Al-Arab Al-Yawm reported.
