The United States and Saudi Arabia have presented a united front to Iran and Syria, alerting Iran's leadership that patience over its alleged nuclear ambitions is wearing thin and warning Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that they will boost support to rebels unless he steps down.

John Kerry, the US secretary of state, was in Saudi Arabia on Monday on the latest leg of a nine-nation tour through Europe and the Middle East on his first overseas trip as Washington's top diplomat

In Riyadh on Monday, Kerry reminded Iran that US President Barack Obama has vowed not to allow Iran to get a

nuclear weapon and that he has kept all options, including military options,on the table to prevent that from happening.

The window of opportunity for a diplomatic solution "cannot by definition remain open indefinitely", Kerry said. "There is time to resolve this issue providing the Iranians are prepared to engage seriously on the P5+1 proposal.

But talks will not go on for the sake of talks and talks cannot become an instrument for delay that will make the situation more dangerous,'' he said.

By BosNewsLife – “Dozens of Ethiopian Christians, mostly women, have been detained in Saudi Arabia after attending a worship service in a private home, BosNewsLife learned Wednesday, February 13.

The Christians – 46 women and six men including three church leaders – were arrested last Friday, February 8, said the well-informed Religious Liberty Commission of the World Evangelical Alliance, or ‘WEA-RLC’, which represents evangelical believers worldwide.

It said the three church leaders – two of them women – were produced in an Islamic court in the eastern city of Dammam on charges of converting Muslims to Christianity.

Authorities were expected to release two of the Ethiopian Christians who have residential permits, but the others were due to be deported, Christians said.

‘We call on Saudi authorities to treat all those arrested with dignity, and release them immediately as there is apparently no evidence for any offense against them,’ said Godfrey Yogarajah, WEA-RLC’s executive director.

‘Arrest of believers for peacefully gathering for worship goes against the spirit of Saudi Arabia’s promotion of inter-religious dialogue in international fora,’ he added.

This isn’t an isolated incident in the Islamic kingdom. In December 2011, Saudi authorities detained 35 Ethiopian Christians, 29 of them women, for ‘illicit mingling,’ after security forces arrested them raiding a private prayer gathering in the eastern city of Jeddah, Christians said at the time.

Obama meets Saudi minister on security and regional issues

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday met with Saudi Arabia's minister of interior at the White House over security and regional issues of mutual interest.

Obama and Prince Mohammed bin Naif bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud affirmed during the meeting the "strong partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia," the White House said in a brief statement.

The prince assumed his current post in November last year, and Obama congratulated him on his appointment and asked him to convey his best wishes to Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud.

Washington values its ties with the kingdom due to its unique role in the Arab and Islamic worlds, its possession of the world's largest reserves of oil and its strategic location.

As partners in counterterrorism efforts, the two countries consult closely on regional security and other issues.

Obama administration ends post-9/11 restrictions on Saudis entering U.S.

ABU DHABI — The United States, a decade after Al Qaida strikes in
New York and Washington, has opened its doors to Saudi nationals.

 

Diplomats said the administration of President Barack Obama has removed
most restrictions on the entry of Saudis to the United States. They said the
percentage of visa approvals for Saudis has reached unprecedented levels.

“The United States aims to raise the number of visas that it issues
annually, particularly to Saudi nationals, who represent an important
group,” Joseph Hood, U.S. consul-general in the Saudi city of Dhahran, said.

 

Hood cited economic reasons for the easing of restrictions on Saudis. He
said Saudi businessmen and students have been allowed to enter the United States in record numbers, with a 60 percent increase since 2010.

 

“They form a large segment of travelers to the United States, while they
also represent an important economic factor,” Hood said. “In addition, Saudi Arabia also sends a large number of students to the United States, and the number of Saudi students in the United States rivals those from India.”

 

The U.S. consulate in Dhahran reported issuing 100 visas per day to
Saudis. In 2012, the total number of visas reached 21,000, nearly 30 percent
of which went to Saudi students or their relatives. About 15,000 Americans
were reported to be based in Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich Eastern Province.

 

The administration decision came amid a series of incidents in which
Saudis were implicated in criminal and security offenses. In February 2011,
a Saudi student was arrested on charges of plotting to bomb the home of
former President George Bush in Texas. Diplomats said more than 70,000
Saudis were registered as studying in the United States.

 

Earlier this month, a sergeant in the Royal Saudi Air Force was arrested on
charges of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy in Las Vegas. Mazen
Alotaibi was identified as a member of a U.S. training program of Saudi
military personnel at the Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland near San Antonio,
Texas.

 

But diplomats said the rate and process of approvals would be enhanced
in 2013. They said the United States has approved more than 95 percent of
visa applications for Saudi Arabia. Those rejected were told they had
provided insufficient documentation.

 

“The consulate has gotten rid of many of the negativities that
occasionally contributed to the delay in the visa application process,
including the language factor, hiring staff that excel in speaking Arabic
and English to facilitate our dealings with visa applicants, especially
those who aren’t fluent in English, particularly as it is mandatory for all
visa applicants to be interviewed,” Hood was quoted by the Saudi media as
telling a news conference in December.

Iranian Meddling in the Gulf Triggers GCC Coalition

 

 

The Gulf Cooperation Council (gcc) has condemned Iran’s interference in the region and is working together to set up a unified, military command.

At the conclusion of a two-day summit December 24-25, the six-member, Saudi-led gcc—which includes Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen and Kuwait—issued a statement that slammed “the continuing Iranian interference in the affairs of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s states and called on Iran to stop these policies.”
Iran has denied any interference in the Gulf—a region that Iran clearly sees as its own backyard, as Reuters reports. Of particular note is Iran’s “backyard” pastime in the nation of Bahrain. Bordering Saudi Arabia and in the neighborhood of the rich Saudi oil fields, Bahrain is strategic for maintaining the economic and geopolitical influence of the Saudis. Bahraini Foreign Minister Khalid Bin Ahmed Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa commented on the “very serious threat” that Iran poses: “Politically, [there is] lots of meddling in the affairs of gcc states … and there is of course the looming nuclear program. [T]he threat level is quite high, but we are ready if faced with circumstances that require action.”
One way the Gulf Cooperation Council is getting “ready” is by integrating its members’ foreign and security polices, and enhancing defense cooperation. The gcc summit communique said the Council had “supported the creation of a unified military command that organizes and plans and leads the ground, naval and air forces.”
The Wall Street Journal wrote that “Saudi Arabia is rallying Muslim nations across the Middle East and Asia to join an informal Arab alliance against Iran.”
