The military could soon be patrolling the streets of Chicago, Illinois if a local lawmaker has her way. State Rep. Monique Davis has asked the governor to deploy the National Guard among an epidemic of violent crime.

Davis, a 76-year-old Democrat who represents Chicago in the Illinois House of Representatives, said Tuesday that Gov. Pat Quinn should order both the Illinois State Police and the Illinois National Guard to assist with law enforcement efforts in her city aimed at curbing crime.

More than 100 people have been shot in only the first 10 days of July. Twenty people were shot during a single evening last month, and at least 72 victims were either injured or killed by guns during the Fourth of July weekend. Last year, a homicide tally that surpassed the 500-person mark set a new record for the city of Chicago. In a Tuesday news conference in Springfield, Illinois, Rep. Davis asked the governor to consider exploring new options.

“I am requesting with this press conference that Gov. Patrick Quinn order the Illinois National Guard (and) the Illinois State Police (to) come to Chicago and work with our mayor Ron (sic) Emanuel to provide safety for the children, especially,” she said at the event, a local CBS station reported.

Gov. Quinn did not immediately respond to the state senator’s request, but in recent days has rallied for efforts that he hoped would have brought violence down in the Windy City. Last week Gov. Quinn said he was using his "constitutional authority to address serious public safety issues” when he made a handful of amendatory changes to a House bill that he hoped would decrease violent crime. Those alterations were rejected, however, and this week Illinois became the last state in the US to lift a prohibition against carrying concealed firearms.

Rep. Brandon Phelps, another Democratic state lawmaker, said residents “finally get to exercise their Second Amendment rights” with gun owners now legally able to carry a concealed weapon.

Majority of Americans disapprove of Obama’s foreign policy handling

Approval for Barack Obama’s foreign policy has dropped to an all-time low, with just 40 percent of Americans backing the president’s handling of international affairs, while 52 percent disagree with his performance on the global stage, a new poll reveals.

The survey, released by Quinnipiac University on Thursday, shows that overall assessments of Obama’s foreign policy are equally bleak when broken down on an issue-by-issue basis.

Only 33 percent of Americans support Obama’s proposed path on dealing with Syria, with the majority opposed to intervention.

Among those polled, only 27 percent of registered voters believe US involvement in Syria serves the national interest, while the same number Americans support the president’s plan of providing arms and military supplies to forces fighting to topple the government of President Bashar Assad.

Meanwhile, 59 percent of Americans remain opposed to providing material support to Syrian rebels, with the overall lack of support cutting across party lines.

Why Did The Obama Administration “Organize And Manage” Protests Against George Zimmerman?

Is the Obama administration at least partially responsible for turning the George Zimmerman trial into such a huge national spectacle?  Judicial Watch has obtained documents which prove that the Community Relations Service, a division of the Department of Justice, was sent to Sanford, Florida in late March 2012 “to help organize and manage rallies and protests against George Zimmerman“.  This included spending quite a bit of money, arranging meetings between the NAACP and local leaders, and providing police escorts for protesters.  Someone needs to ask Obama why the federal government was doing this.  A story that should have never made national headlines now threatens to unleash a firestorm of racial fury unlike anything we have seen since the Rodney King verdict.  One young man, a neighborhood watch captain, shot and killed another young man.  This kind of thing happens in American cities every single night.  George Zimmerman says that he did it in self-defense.  He should be allowed to have his day in court and that should be the end of the matter.  But instead, this thing has been hyped into a massive national spectacle and it is being used to divide us along racial lines.  And it appears that we have clear evidence that the Obama administration was involved in doing the hyping.

The documents that Judicial Watch was able to obtain contain some absolutely startling information.  Apparently the role of the Obama administration in these protests was quite substantial…

• April 11 – 12, 2012, CRS spent $552.35 in Sanford, FL “to provide technical assistance for the preparation of possible marches and rallies related to the fatal shooting of a 17 year old African American male.”
