Obama Immigration Reform's Inclusion of Same-Sex Couples a 'Deal-Killer?'

Evangelicals who have come together to support immigration reform have expressed concern over the White House's decision to include support for same-sex couples in their official immigration proposal.

While not mentioning the issue during his Tuesday speech demanding comprehensive immigration reform, President Barack Obama's proposal does include measures that pertain to same-sex couples.
The Rev. Gabriel Salguero, president of the National Latino Evangelical Coalition, told The Christian Post that he questioned the inclusion of another hot button issue in an already tense subject.
"It seems to me that … you are combining two disparate issues when it hasn't been resolved in the national consciousness. I do not understand it strategically," said Salguero. "We want immigration reform, but I think to put this issue as part of it is really going to complicate it for conservatives who really want immigration reform."
Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, told CP that such a proposal would be a "deal-killer."
"Same-sex partner provisions such as those included in the Uniting American Families Act would be strongly opposed by many in our communities who are otherwise sympathetic or even enthusiastic about the benefits of immigration reform," said Land."[President Obama] needs to understand that's a deal breaker for lots of us and it needs to not be in there."
In a speech delivered Tuesday about immigration reform, President Obama laid out the many components to reform that he believed were needed.
The president's proposal will also include extending certain immigration benefits to bi-national same-sex couples, who presently do not receive the same benefits as opposite-sex couples.
According to the section on "Streamlining Legal Immigration" on an online White House fact-sheet, "It also treats same-sex families as families by giving U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents the ability to seek a visa on the basis of a permanent relationship with a same-sex partner."
Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, said in a statement that he took issue with that part of the proposal due to current federal law.
"This is yet another example of the President playing politics rather than enforcing our nation's laws and offering a true, workable solution," said Brown.
"First, his Administration threw in the towel and refused to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Then, he came out of the closet on gay marriage. Now, he is apparently proposing a direct violation of DOMA, currying added favor with gay activists, many of whom have lavished contributions on his reelection campaign."
Regarding how successful such a proposal for this extension of benefits would be, Land told CP that he doubted the effort would get through Congress.
"I don't think it will be in any proposal that passes the House and the Senate because with it in there it won't pass the House and the Senate," said Land.
"So the president needs to decide whether he wants to immigration reform passed this year or not … We're just saying that that's a deal-killer."

Two major US porn companies have filed a suit to try to overturn a law requiring porn actors in Los Angeles County to wear condoms.

Vivid Entertainment and Califa Productions say the measure violates the guarantee of free speech in the US constitution's First Amendment.
The law, known as Measure B, was approved by voters in November.
The measure was supported by the Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF), which said it would shield actors from HIV.
"Overturning this law is something I feel very passionate about," Steven Hirsch, founder of the Vivid Entertainment, told AFP news agency.
"I believe the industry's current testing system works well," he added.
Porn actors Kayden Kross and Logan Pierce are joining the challenge against the law.
HIV scares Measure B expanded to county level an ordinance which had already been passed in the city of Los Angeles, requiring condom use as a condition of receiving a filming permit there.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed that measure into law in January 2012.
Adult production companies have threatened to move out of California because of the requirement, but face legal difficulties.
A 1988 ruling by the California Supreme Court prevented producers from being prosecuted under anti-prostitution laws, and only one other state - New Hampshire - has a similar ruling.
Adult film productions in the LA area have been suspended in the past because of HIV scares.
Critics of the condom requirement say actors are regularly tested, and such a requirement would hurt business and push production studios underground.
"We found that a lot of viewers at home don't want to see condom porn," Keiran Lee, a British porn actor in Los Angeles, told BBC's Newsbeat in January last year.

Planned Parenthood's New Annual Report: We Did 333,964 Abortions; 1 Every 94 Seconds

 

 

(CNSNews.com) – Planned Parenthood Federation of America's latest annual report for 2011-2012 says that its affiliated clinics performed 333,964 abortions in fiscal 2011.
That works out to an average of one abortion every 94 seconds.
The 333,964 abortion Planned Parenthood did in fiscal 2011 is an increase of 4,519 from the 329,445 abortions it did in 2010, according to a fact sheet that Planned Parenthood published last year.
Over two years, Planned Parenthood says, it has aborted 663,409.
The 2011-2012 report states that Planned Parenthood received $542.4 million in “government health services grants and reimbursements,” which it states includes “payments from Medicaid managed care plans.”
The report also shows that Planned Parenthood’s total assets top $1 billion dollars, specifically $1,244.7 billion.
“We are so proud of the year’s many successes, and deeply grateful for all the partners, sponsors, volunteers, staff and friends who helped make them possible,” states the report's introductory letter, signed by PPFA president Cecile Richards and Cecelia Boone, chairwoman of the organization.

The Problem with calling behavior "BIBLICAL"

On "The Daily Show" recently, Jon Stewart grilled Mike Huckabee about a TV ad in which Huckabee urged voters to support “biblical values” at the voting box.

When Huckabee said that he supported the “biblical model of marriage,” Stewart shot back that “the biblical model of marriage is polygamy.”

And there’s a big problem, Stewart went on, with reducing “biblical values” to one or two social issues such as abortion and gay marriage, while ignoring issues such as poverty and immigration reform.

It may come as some surprise that as an evangelical Christian, I cheered Stewart on from my living room couch.

Atheists' move halts Christmas tradition in California, churches go to court to get it back.

Damon Vix didn't have to go to court to push Christmas out of the city of Santa Monica. He just joined the festivities.

The atheist's anti-God message alongside a life-sized nativity display in a park overlooking the beach ignited a debate that burned brighter than any Christmas candle.

Santa Monica officials snuffed the city's holiday tradition this year rather than referee the religious rumble, prompting churches that have set up a 14-scene Christian diorama for decades to sue over freedom of speech violations. Their attorney will ask a federal judge Monday to resurrect the depiction of Jesus' birth, while the city aims to eject the case.

"It's a sad, sad commentary on the attitudes of the day that a nearly 60-year-old Christmas tradition is now having to hunt for a home, something like our savior had to hunt for a place to be born because the world was not interested," said Hunter Jameson, head of the nonprofit Santa Monica Nativity Scene Committee that is suing.

This battle is being waged in the media, in the classrooms and courts, and even in the court of public opinion. It is a stealth war, with those on the side of evil using the admonition of compromise and tolerance as very effective weapons.

Christians are admonished, even by their own pastors, Catholic priests and ministers to be tolerant of alternative lifestyles that redefine the traditional family. Many accept and even endorse the teaching of the homosexual lifestyle in elementary school, the promotion of contraception as simply being part of the changing times – the new reality. There is a very real multifaceted assault taking place on our Judeo-Christian faith that involves not only redefining marriage, but also forcing Christians to subsidize abortions, support endless wars declared by the globalists under the cloak of patriotism, and so on.
