In ancient times watchman would mount the city walls in times of stress to survey the scene outside the fortifications. He was situated on a spot from which he could monitor the approaches to the town. If a threat appeared, he would sound a warning and the town would shut its gates and prepare for battle.

A second is in El Arish; a third along the Egyptian-Israeli border and a fourth in Jebel Halal.

DEBKAfile: Russian giant military transport lands in Syria
DEBKAfile May 29, 2013, 8:51 AM (GMT+02:00)
A giant Russian military transport landed in Latakia Tuesday carrying 60 tons of “humanitarian aid to Syria,” DEBKAfile reports. The nature of this cargo is unknown, but it is likely to be the opposite of humanitarian, given Moscow’s expanding military assistance to Bashar Assad and intervention in the Syrian civil war. Tuesday, Moscow termed its dispatch of S-300 anti-air missiles to Assad “a stabilizing factor” for dissuading “hotheads” from entering the conflict.

IDF chief issues stern warning to Assad over rapidly heating border
End Of Days News
Damascus will ‘bear consequences’ of further gunfire, says Gantz, after cross-border shooting; tensions ‘several times more explosive than they were this morning,’ says top Israeli analyst
Israel’s military chief issued a severe warning to Bashar Assad on Tuesday, saying the Syrian leader would “bear the consequences” of any more attacks on Israeli forces near the Syrian border.
Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz issued his threat hours after an Israeli jeep came under fire during a patrol in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.
Syria claimed it destroyed an Israeli vehicle that crossed the ceasefire line in the Golan Heights overnight. A statement issued by the Syrian Armed Forces said its troops destroyed the vehicle “with those in it.” It did not elaborate, but said any attempt to infiltrate Syria’s territory will face “immediate and firm retaliation.”

Israeli home defense drill to focus on missile and chemical threats
DEBKAfile May 21, 2013, 6:05 PM (GMT+02:00)
Home Defense Minister Gilead Erdan disclosed Tuesday that the annual “Steadfast Home Front – 1” exercise starting next Sunday will postulate equal risks to the military and home fronts. He said this eventuality was only now a question of time.
Addressing a news conference, the minister said the exercise would stage scenarios of large population centers and strategic facilities under attack from thousands of missiles from Syria, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. Chemical strikes will also be rehearsed. Maj.Gen. Eyal Eisenberg, head of the IDF Home Front Command, said a chemical strike would challenge the IDF’s command and control capacity. The IDF is keeping a close watch on events in Syria from the northern border, he said. “We wouldn’t be practicing a massive missile war scenario unless we believed the enemy had the operational capability to attack Israel’s civilian population.

Yaalon: We destroyed Syrian Golan position. Damascus: We fired on Israeli patrol
End Of Days News
Syria and Israel crossed verbal swords Tuesday, May 21, after an overnight exchange of fire on the Golan.
When the Damascus government claimed responsibility for the gunfire on an Israeli Golan patrol Monday night and threatened to strike back for any Israeli reprisals, Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon shot back by saying: “Our policy is clear – we don’t interfere in Syria’s civil war, but neither will we let the fire spill over onto our territory. Last night,” he added, “we destroyed a Syrian army position on the Golan which fired at an IDF patrol.”
He spoke during a tour of naval facilities in Atlit and Haifa.
On a visit to the Golan, IDF chief of staff Lt. Benny Gantz and OC Northern Command Yair Golan ordered Israeli Golan positions to return any fire coming from the Syrian side, a reversal of previous policy.
No one was hurt on the Israeli side. But this time, unlike the two previous incidents, Israeli forces directed a Tamuz rocket at the source of the gunfire and identified a direct hit.
To inflate the episode, the Syrian statement claimed an IDF vehicle damaged in the attack was destroyed.

Syrian fire on Israeli Golan patrol was not returned
DEBKAfile May 20, 2013, 8:32 AM (GMT+02:00)
An Israeli military patrol on the Golan came under fire early Monday near the Tel Hazaka position from the Syrian side. As in the case of the mortar shelling on Mt. Hermon Saturday, fire was not returned. DEBKAfile: This appears to be in keeping with a new Israeli policy of restraint against Syria, which military sources predict will generate escalated attacks from the Syrian side.

Iran test-fires missiles near Strait of Hormuz
TEHRAN, Iran -
Iran's navy says it has test-fired a range of weapons during ongoing maneuvers near the Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for one-fifth of the world's oil supply.
The Monday report by the official IRNA news agency quotes exercise spokesman Adm. Amir Rastgari as saying the Iranian-made air defense system Raad, or Thunder, was among the weapons tested.
Iran says the system fires missiles with a range of 50 kilometers (30 miles), capable of hitting targets at 22,000 meters (75,000 feet).
He said torpedoes and underwater and surface-to-surface rockets were also successfully tested.
The drill began Friday and ends Wednesday. It's one of a number of exercises Iran holds annually.
Iran has in the past said it might close the strait over Western sanctions, but has not made such threats recently.
