The air strikes came hours after rebels overran the northern city of Raqqa
Monday. At least 20 of rebels and “tens of regular soldiers” were killed in
battle and the air strikes. A witness reported that the city center was being
bombarded by warplanes. Raqqa is situated on the Euphrates River near the
Turkish border. It shelters hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees from
war-torn homes in other parts of the country.
